Early Decision (ED)

Early Decision (ED) is a binding college application plan. You apply early (usually by November 1 or 15), receive a decision in mid-December, and if admitted, you commit to attend that school and withdraw all other applications.

Why It Matters

A Powerful Strategic Commitment

ED is one of the most powerful strategic tools in college admissions and one of the most misunderstood. Many students hear “it increases your chances” and apply without fully understanding the commitment. Colleges use ED to lock in students who are highly likely to enroll (raising their yield rate). In return, they often admit a higher percentage of ED applicants than Regular Decision applicants.

Common misconception:

“ED just means you hear back early.”

Reality:

It is a contract. If the school admits you and offers a financial aid package that meets your demonstrated need (as defined by the school), you are expected to enroll.

How It Affects Your Chances

The Admitted Student Advantage

At many selective colleges, the ED acceptance rate is significantly higher than the Regular Decision rate, sometimes 2–4× higher. However, the boost is not automatic. You still need a competitive academic profile. Applying ED with stats well below the school’s middle 50% rarely overcomes that gap.

ED also removes your ability to compare financial aid offers. This makes it risky if cost is a major factor.

How Vega Helps

Real-Time Strategy Modeling

Vega’s Fit algorithm accounts for the ED advantage by applying school-specific multipliers based on historical admissions data. When you mark a school as an ED choice in your profile or run a What-If scenario, your personalized admission odds update in real time to reflect the typical ED boost at that college.

You can also model different strategies:
